Discover Coron, Philippines: Key Highlights and Tips for an Incredible Adventure

When you think of tropical paradises, Coron in the Philippines definitely stands out. Nestled on Busuanga Island in the stunning province of Palawan, Coron is a treasure trove of breathtaking islands, magnificent rock formations, and serene natural lagoons. With its spectacular views, vibrant marine life, and endless activities, Coron is the perfect spot to explore the beauty of the Philippines. My partner and I spent three unforgettable nights in Coron back in March, and we can’t wait to share everything we discovered with you!

Getting to Coron: Your Gateway to Paradise

Most travelers kick off their adventure in the Philippines by flying into Manila. From there, it’s a quick 90-minute flight to Busuanga Airport, which is the nearest airport to Coron. Upon landing, taxis are readily available just outside the airport, making it easy to reach your hotel—this trip typically takes about 30 minutes. If you prefer a more tailored experience, you can even book a taxi in advance, ensuring a smooth transfer to your accommodation. We paid around €30 per person for our flights from Manila, which is relatively affordable, considering the distances involved.

For those traveling from El Nido, a scenic boat or ferry ride to Coron offers a different perspective of the breathtaking landscapes that define this region. This journey lasts about 3 to 4 hours, and the fare usually costs around €28 per person. As the tourism season can get busy, it’s wise to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid any last-minute hassles.

But here’s an exciting tip: instead of taking the ferry, consider booking a multi-day expedition boat tour! This allows you to spend your nights on some of the most beautiful remote islands while snorkeling in breathtaking spots along the way. This unique experience allows for more intimate interaction with nature, making it a must-do for any adventure seeker. Trust us, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss (more on that later)!

If you’re coming from Cebu, direct flights connect Cebu to Coron, taking about an hour and a half and costing approximately €30 per person. Depending on your travel itinerary, this option can be appealing if you wish to explore other islands outside of Palawan.

Finding Your Home Base in Coron

While Coron can easily be enjoyed in just a couple of days, staying for two to three nights allows you to soak up the local culture and enjoy everything this area has to offer. Finding a comfortable and conveniently located place to stay is key to maximizing your time and enjoyment.

It’s highly recommended to stay in the center of Coron, where you’ll find numerous restaurants, shops, and local attractions within walking distance. This not only makes it easier to explore but also enhances your experience of the vibrant local life.

Hotel Recommendation: Jai-cob’s Suites

For accommodation, we highly recommend Jai-cob’s Suites. Located right in the heart of Coron, this newly opened hotel features spacious rooms equipped with hot showers—an absolute luxury in Coron! The modern decor combines comfort and functionality, making it an excellent choice for travelers who want both relaxation and convenience. The staff at Jai-cob’s are incredibly friendly and eager to help you make the most of your stay, providing local insights and tips for your adventures. Plus, if you’re looking to unwind after a day of exploring, they offer massages right at the hotel. We paid around €42 per night for a double room, which we thought was a great deal for the quality we received.

This hotel’s central location also means you can easily access nearby attractions without the hassle of lengthy transportation. You can stroll through the town, engage with local vendors, and even discover hidden gems that might not be featured in travel guides.

Solo Travelers: Check Out Hop Hostel Coron

If you’re traveling solo or don’t mind sharing a dorm, consider Hop Hostel. This cozy place features a lovely garden with a swimming pool where you can relax after a day of exploring. The atmosphere is perfect for meeting fellow travelers and sharing stories of your adventures. They also have a rooftop bar that boasts stunning panoramic views of Coron, making it a popular spot to unwind with a drink. With prices under €30 per person per night, it’s one of the top-rated hostels in the Philippines, offering a great blend of comfort, community, and budget-friendliness.

For those who enjoy socializing and forging new friendships, hostels can provide a unique travel experience. The communal areas encourage interaction, making it easier to connect with other adventurers who share your passion for exploration.

Things to Do in Coron: 8 Must-See Highlights and Tips

With your home base set, you’re ready to dive into the adventures awaiting you in Coron. From the vibrant underwater world to the majestic views atop the hills, here are the top things you absolutely shouldn’t miss during your visit.

1. Island Hopping: Explore the Best Spots by Boat

When you think about what to do in Coron, the number one activity that comes to mind is island hopping. This is the ultimate way to discover the pristine beauty of the islands surrounding Coron. You’ll find immaculate beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and impressive rock formations, all accessible only by boat.

Choosing Between Private and Group Tours

There are two options for these tours: a group tour or a private one. While group tours can be a fun way to meet new people, we highly recommend opting for a private tour. With a private tour, you can customize your itinerary based on your interests and preferences. You can decide your departure time and even stop at the local market to pick up fresh ingredients for lunch, adding a personal touch to your experience. We chose to leave early, around 7:00 AM, which allowed us to beat the crowds. By 9:00 AM, the popular spots were bustling with tourists, which made our private tour even more enjoyable.

The standout locations on our private tour were Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Banul Beach, and Barracuda Lake. Each spot had its own charm and beauty that took our breath away. For instance, Kayangan Lake, often hailed as the cleanest lake in the Philippines, offers stunning views and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Meanwhile, the Twin Lagoon showcases a unique feature: you can swim from one lagoon to another through a small opening, providing an exhilarating experience that’s hard to forget.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay for a Boat Tour?

The cost of a private boat tour may seem steep at first, but it’s worth every penny. We paid €120 for two people, which included lunch and five stops. Group tours, on the other hand, are much more budget-friendly, costing between €20 to €30 per person, depending on the route and season. You can easily arrange a boat tour through various hotels and tour operators in Coron town. We had a fantastic experience with Amazing Dream Travel & Tours, who organized everything perfectly.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and sunscreen! A waterproof bag is also a great idea to keep your valuables safe while you’re enjoying the water. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially under the sun, and protecting your skin from UV rays will help ensure a pleasant experience throughout your adventures.

2. Catch the Sunset from Mount Tapyas

After a day of island hopping, head to Mount Tapyas for an unforgettable sunset experience. This spot is famous for its panoramic views of Coron and its offshore islands. To get to the viewpoint, you’ll need to tackle a 700-step climb. While it may sound daunting, the breathtaking view at the top is absolutely worth it. As you ascend the steps, you’re rewarded with glimpses of the lush landscapes and shimmering waters surrounding the area, building anticipation for the view that awaits you at the summit.

Just remember to bring some snacks, drinks, or maybe even a cold beer to enjoy as you watch the sun dip below the horizon. The golden hues of the sunset against the backdrop of the sea create a breathtaking spectacle, making it a perfect moment to reflect on your day and capture beautiful photos.

The area can get busy, especially around sunset, so consider arriving early to secure a good spot. The experience is not just about the view; it’s about soaking in the atmosphere, chatting with fellow travelers, and appreciating the natural beauty surrounding you.

3. Relax at Manquinit Hot Springs

If you’re in the mood for some relaxation, make your way to the Manquinit Hot Springs, located about a 20-minute drive from Coron town. This serene getaway features two natural hot spring pools, one at a soothing 30 degrees Celsius and the other at a toasty 40 degrees. The minerals in the water are believed to have therapeutic properties, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation after a day of adventure. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to visit, but we’ve heard great things about it!

To enhance your experience, you can book a combined tour that includes a quick city tour and a trip to Mount Tapyas for about €16 per person. This way, you can make the most of your day while enjoying different aspects of Coron.

Visiting the hot springs is not just about the soothing water; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and unwind in a beautiful setting. Bring a good book or some music to enhance your relaxation, and don’t forget your camera to capture the serene surroundings.

4. Dive into History with Shipwreck Diving

Are you a diving enthusiast? If so, you’re in for a treat! Coron is renowned for its incredible wreck diving opportunities, attracting divers from around the globe. The area is home to several sunken Japanese WWII ships, and exploring these historic wrecks is an unforgettable experience.

One of the most popular wreck dives is the “Irako Maru,” a 10,000-ton freighter that sank in 1944. This massive ship is now teeming with vibrant marine life, making it a great spot for divers to explore. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, various diving shops in Coron offer courses and guided dives to cater to all skill levels.

If you’re not a certified diver, fear not! You can take an introductory course that allows you to dive under the supervision of an instructor. Prices for wreck dives start at around €40 per person, which includes equipment rental, a guide, and a full day of diving.

Diving is not only an adventure; it’s a chance to witness history firsthand and appreciate the vibrant underwater ecosystem that has flourished around these wrecks. Each dive tells a story, and the sense of discovery you’ll experience is unparalleled.

5. Experience Kayaking at Kayangan Lake

After you’ve explored the underwater world, take a break from diving and enjoy a kayaking adventure at Kayangan Lake. Rent a kayak on-site and paddle through the serene waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. The peaceful atmosphere of Kayangan Lake is a welcome contrast to the excitement of diving and island hopping.

Don’t forget to pack a picnic! The scenic landscape and calm waters create the perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. Whether you bring along some local snacks or a full lunch, eating with such a view will enhance your experience.

Kayangan Lake vs. Barracuda Lake

Both Kayangan Lake and Barracuda Lake are must-visit spots, but they offer different experiences. While Kayangan is known for its stunning turquoise waters, Barracuda Lake boasts a unique feature: thermoclines. As you swim deeper, you’ll feel a noticeable change in temperature. This unique phenomenon creates an interesting underwater experience, making it worth visiting both lakes during your trip.

Strolling through Coron’s market is an experience in itself. The vibrant colors and bustling atmosphere create an enjoyable environment as you browse local produce, seafood, and handmade crafts.
